The Choice (Lancaster County Secrets #1) by Suzanne Woods Fisher

The Choice (Lancaster County Secrets #1) by Suzanne Woods Fisher

With a vibrant, fresh style Suzanne Woods Fisher brings readers into the world of a young Amish woman torn between following the man she loves--or joining the community of faith that sustains her, even as she questions some of the decisions of her elders. Her choice begins a torrent of change for her and her family, including a marriage of convenience to silent Daniel Miller. Both bring broken hearts into their arrangement--and secrets that have been held too long.

Filled with gentle romance, The Choice opens the world of the Amish--their strong communities, their simple life, and their willingness to put each other first. Combined with Fisher's exceptional gift for character development, this novel, the first in a series, is a welcome reminder that it is never too late to find your way back to God.

Editorial Review

From Publishers Weekly
The newest entry to the growing ranks of bonnet fiction writers is Fisher, who has written Amish nonfiction (Amish Peace). This Lancaster County tale centers on Carrie Weaver, who marries an Amish man for convenience though her heart is committed to another. Carrie struggles to care for her hemophiliac younger brother as she lives with the consequences of her own choices. The outline is promising, but the execution flawed. An intriguing heroine shows the author's potential, but major problems compromise the book's overall merit. The plot creaks too loudly; a few too many characters die to complicate the action, and the character who poses the biggest threat is more a caricature than credible villain. Minor characters—an oversized lovable ex-con, a harpy stepmother—likewise mostly serve plot rather than populate a convincingly drawn world. The language can get adjective-laden and trite (The air had grown thick and heavy). Bonnet fiction devotees might be able to overlook some problems, but this is not a strong new offering in the subgenre. (Jan.)

From the Back Cover

Lancaster County has always been her home--but where does her heart belong?
One moment Carrie Weaver was looking forward to running away with Lancaster Barnstormers pitcher Solomon Riehl--plans that included leaving the Amish community where they grew up. The next moment she was staring into a future as broken as her heart. Now, Carrie is faced with a choice. But will this opportunity be all she hoped? Or will this decision, this moment in time, change her life forever?
A tender story of love, forgiveness, and looking below the surface, The Choice uncovers the sweet simplicity of the Amish world--and shows that it's never too late to find your way back to God.

"Fisher's writing brings that Amish sense of peace into your own world. The Choice brings an entirely new perspective to the Amish way of life. You will love it!"--Kristin Billerbeck, author of What a Girl Wants

"A story of endearing characters. . . . Fisher writes with a fresh mix of humor and depth, splashing raw emotion onto the pages. I guarantee your heart will be touched."--Ginger Kolbaba, founding editor of Kyria.com, former editor of Today's Christian Woman, and author of Desperate Pastors' Wives

The Measure of Katie Calloway by Serena B Miller

The Measure of Katie Calloway by Serena B Miller

The Civil War has ended, but in Katie Calloway's Georgia home conflict still rages. To protect herself and her young brother from her violent and unstable husband, she flees north, finding anonymity and sanctuary as the cook in a Northwoods lumber camp. The camp owner, Robert Foster, wonders if the lovely woman he's hired has the grit to survive the never-ending work and harsh conditions of a remote pine forest in winter. Katie wonders if she can keep her past a secret from a man she is slowly growing to love.

With grace and skill, Serena Miller brings to life a bygone era. From the ethereal, snowy forest and the warm cookstove to the rowdy shanty boys and the jagged edges of the saw, every detail is perfectly rendered, transporting the reader back to the time when pine was king, men were made of iron, and rivers were choked with logs on the way to the sawmills. Readers will have a hard time leaving the Northwoods when they turn the last page.

Paradise Valley (The Daughters of Caleb Bender #1) by Dale Cramer

Paradise Valley (The Daughters of Caleb Bender #1) by Dale Cramer

An Amish settlement in Ohio has run afoul of a law requiring their children to attend public school. Caleb Bender and his neighbors are arrested for neglect, with the state ordering the children be placed in an institution. Among them are Caleb's teenage daughter, Rachel, and the boy she has her eye on, Jake Weaver. Romance blooms between the two when Rachel helps Jake escape the children's home.

Searching for a place to relocate his family where no such laws apply, Caleb learns there's inexpensive land for sale in Mexico, a place called Paradise Valley. Despite rumors of instability in the wake of the Mexican revolution, the Amish community decides this is their answer. And since it was Caleb's idea, he and his family will be the pioneers. They will send for the others once he's established a foothold and assessed the situation.

Caleb's daughters are thrown into turmoil. Rachel doesn't want to leave Jake. Her sister, Emma, who has been courting Levi Mullet, fears her dreams of marriage will be dashed. Miriam has never had a beau and is acutely aware there will be no prospects in Mexico.
Once there, they meet Domingo, a young man and guide who takes a liking to Miriam, something her father would never approve. While Paradise Valley is everything they'd hoped it would be, it isn't long before the bandits start giving them trouble, threatening to upset the fledgling Amish settlement, even putting their lives in danger. Thankfully no one has been harmed so far, anyway.

Editorial Review

From Booklist
Cramer follows his acclaimed novel Levi’s Will (2005) with another inspiring and honest look at the Amish community in the opening volume in the Daughters of Caleb Bender trilogy. In 1920s Ohio, Amish fathers are taken to court and imprisoned when they refuse to allow their children to attend public school. Matters escalate when the Amish children are removed from their parents’ homes, stripped of their plain appearance, and forced to live in a children’s home while they attend public school. This incident inspires Caleb Bender to move his entire family to Mexico. Faced with rebuilding a homestead while battling bandits, Cramer’s characters dig deep to find the forgiveness and the strength it takes to truly love one’s enemies. Cramer’s ability to develop characters with genuine struggles sets this Amish novel apart from the rest, especially because it’s based on Cramer’s great-grandfather’s experiences as an elder statesman of the colony Paradise Valley, Mexico. Fans of historical fiction will find enough here to spur further research, and for followers of Amish fiction, this is a must-read. --Elizabeth Ponder

Enchanting the Lady by Kathryne Kennedy

Enchanting the LadyIn a Victorian London where titles are based on the inheritance of magical powers, a were-lion's obsessive quest for Merlin's relics will threaten his love for a disinherited duchess--as well as their very lives.

.......................................................................................................................................

Editorial Review

From Publishers Weekly
Little-noticed Felicity Seymour is a woman with a problem: she can't take control of her parents' lands until she can prove her magical abilities, of which she's never had the slightest hint. When she meets a handsome were-lion baronet, Terence Blackwell, she's surprised at his interest; what she doesn't know is that Terence smells the taint of relic-magic on her, the same magic that killed his brother. Resolving to learn her secrets, Terence courts the worried wallflower and is as surprised as anyone when he falls head over heels. Soon after they marry in secret, Felicity discovers that people she's trusted all her life are conspiring to steal her magic, her title and her land. Now she's got to stop them with the help of her new husband—but how much does she really know about her mysterious mate? The latest from Kennedy (Beneath the Thirteen Moons) is simply delightful, set in a fantasy-touched Victorian England that's imaginative, historically vigorous and ripe for further adventures. Felicity is a pleasantly unassuming heroine and is well matched in Terence, while the identity of the villain will keep readers guessing until the very end. (Jan.)
Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

From Booklist
"In a Victorian England where magic dwells, Sir Terence Blackwell ignores the prejudice against "werepeople" to faithfully serve Prince Albert, protecting him from harm, especially the danger caused by the relics of Merlin, artifacts forged by the grand wizard himself and too powerful for humans, magic bearing or not, to possess. He can't believe the day he smells relic magic within the prince's own palace, nor that its scent clings so strongly to a striking debutante, Lady Felicity Seymour, taking her tests to inherit her ducal title. Terence is willing to risk anything to discover the lady's ties to the relic, although he never realized anything could include his heart. The first in Kennedy's Relics of Merlin series, the novel takes a number of fairy tales, most notably Beauty and the Beast, and delightfully turns them on their collective ear. Playful prose carries the reader through this well-crafted, sexy romp of a story sporting an engaging cast." -- Nina C. Davis -- Booklist, December 1, 2007

A PERFECT 10~"ENCHANTING THE LADY is a phenomenal read...It isn't often that a book captures my attention so thoroughly; however, ENCHANTING THE LADY with its superb blend of Victorian England, magic, shape-shifters, and characters who positively come to life, definitely did. This is one of those rare and wonderful books that will leave a smile lingering on your face long after you're done reading. Thank goodness this is the beginning of a new series, because I can't wait to visit this magical world again. I find myself compelled to give ENCHANTING THE LADY the highest praise I can think of, a Perfect 10. Brava, Kathryne!" Lori Ann -- Romance Reviews Today, January 1, 2008

On Bear Mountain by Deborah Smith

On Bear MountainDirt-poor, sensitive as poets, and proud as kings, the Powell family has lived on a Georgia mountaintop for generations. Then, during the 1960’s, young Ursula Powell’s father convinces the Tiber family, owners everything in nearby Tiberville, to commission a huge iron sculpture of a bear for the town. Decades later the strange sculpture – rejected by the townspeople and left to rust on the Powell farm – symbolizes a family’s failure and thwarted dreams. But, unknown to Ursula, it is now worth such a huge fortune that the artist’s embittered son, Quentin Ricconni, is coming to reclaim it . . . and to change everything Ursula believes about the past, the choices that break a heart, and the redeeming powers of art and love.

.......................................................................................................................................

Editorial Review

From Publishers Weekly
A hillbilly girl from Georgia and a rebellious Brooklyn boy find out the hard way that some family ties bind tighter than others in this highly readable novel by the author of A Place to Call Home. Ursula Powell lives in the shadow of the Iron Bear, a sculpture commissioned by a distant relative for a local college campus as a tribute to the ursine presence in Bear Creek, Ga. Fashioned by a New York artist from scrap metal donated by local families, the Bear sparks a smoldering feud between the poor, chicken-farming Powells and their wealthier chicken-processing-plant cousins, the Tibers. When the Tibers threaten to trash the Bear, Ursula's father scrapes together money the family can ill afford to install the sculpture in the Powell pasture. Resenting her father for the hardship she believes he has brought on the family, scrappy Ursula grows up fighting class oppression and backwoods superstitions. Meanwhile, Quentin Riconni, son of the artist who created the Bear, also grows up resenting his father. Quentin and his mother live in poverty in Brooklyn, while the senior Riconni devotes himself to his unprofitable art upstate. Not until 20 years after Quentin's father's death are his sculptures applauded, earning millions of dollars for his widow and son. When Quentin discovers that the Bear is owned by the Powells, he sets out on a journey of self-discoveryDone fated to include Ursula. A few too many crowd-pleasing elements are packed into this romantic weeper, but Smith practices her craft adroitly and tells a genuinely moving story. (Feb. 7) Forecast: Regional appearances in Georgia will stir interest in this novel, which may find a larger readership with fans of Anne Rivers Siddons and other Southern authors. Rights have been sold in the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy and Norway.

From Library Journal
This is an entertaining, affecting romance about two people brought together by circumstances not entirely of their making. Ursula Powell grew up in the shadow of Bear Mountain in north Georgia, daughter of a tenant farmer with an interest in art. Quentin Riconni grew up in Brooklyn, NY, son of an aspiring sculptor and a fiercely loyal mother. In the mid-1960s Quentin's father received a commission to create a bear sculpture for the Georgia College campus; the result was an avant-garde abstract metal piece not well received by the locals. Ursula's father used all his savings to keep the bear from destruction, which meant that he could not afford to pay the medical bills for his wife, who had died in childbirth. Meanwhile, Quentin's father quit his job to sculpt full time, deserting his wife and son. The book is written from the alternating points of view of Ursula and Quentin. Neither Susie Breck nor Dick Hill handles the Southern or the Brooklyn accents very well, however, the story line is strong enough that you'll want to listen through to the happy ending. For large popular collections. Nann Blaine Hilyard, Lake Villa Dist. Lib., IL

From Booklist
Smith has fashioned a beautifully written and unusual story about two fragile families connected by a sculpture that changes their lives. The Riconnis live in Brooklyn, the Powells in the Georgia mountains. Richard Riconni welds scrap metal into works of art. Tom Powell raises chickens but has a deep appreciation for art and a passionate interest in bears. In 1966, a wealthy cousin of Tom's commissions Richard to create a sculpture of a bear made from local scrap metal. Most are appalled by Richard's abstract creation, but Tom loves it and eventually pays $200 that he can ill afford to save the sculpture from destruction. And that's when the bear begins to exert its strange powers. Tom's young daughter, Ursula, blames the bear for the death of her mother and her newborn brother's autism. Richard, inspired by the commission, quits his job to sculpt full time, but this plunges his wife and son, Quentin, into poverty, and Richard eventually takes his own life. Quentin, a brilliant scholar with a full scholarship to MIT, is devastated, although he later benefits from his father's posthumous fame. Then, when he discovers that the bear sculpture is on Bear Mountain, he travels there in the hope of bringing it home to his ailing mother. But, instead, Quentin finds Ursula caring for her brother, Arthur, in the stunned aftermath of their father's sudden death and realizes that Arthur has a mystical attachment to the bear. Smith, a spellbinding storyteller, weaves a shimmering web of sorrows and joys around these two families, the scrap-metal bear that became their totem, and her enchanted readers. Diana Tixier Herald

Only You by Deborah Grace Staley

Only You by Deborah Grace StaleyA charming romance about the lives and loves of people in a small Tennessee town. In the tradition of Debbie Macomber. "Hey, ya'll. Dixie Ferguson here. I run Ferguson's Diner in Angel Ridge, Tennessee. Population three hundred forty-five. It's a picturesque town in the valley of the Little Tennessee River, established in 1785. In the early days, its first families--the McKays, the Wallaces, the Houstons, the Joneses, and, of course, the Craigs--staked their claims on hundreds of acres of the richest bottom land anyone had ever seen. After all the years I've spent behind the counter at Ferguson's, I could probably tell ya'll a story about near everyone in town. But we only have so much time, so I'll narrow it down to just two for now. This is a story about coming home. It's also a story about acceptin' folks for who they are. You could say it's a story about Josie Allen, a librarian, and Cole Craig, a handyman, but I say it's a story about finding love where you'd least expect to."

Elvis Takes a Backseat by Leanna Ellis

Elvis Takes a Backseat by Leanna Ellis Elvis Takes a Back Seat by award-winning novelist Leanna Ellis is the endearing story of Claudia, a young widow determined to fulfill her husband-s last request by hauling a three-foot bust of Elvis Presley in the backseat of a vintage Cadillac from Dallas to Memphis to return it to its rightful owner. The road trip-taken with an eccentric aunt who actually knew the -King of Rock -n- Roll,- and a temperamental teen with a suspicious mind of her own-hits some royal roadblocks and detours as these women uncover pieces of their past along with the bust-s mysterious history. What they find along the way changes their lives forever, inspiring readers to also step out in faith.

Editorial Review

From Publishers Weekly
When Claudia, a 40-something Texas widow, holds a garage sale to offload some of her late husband's belongings, she discovers a note he scribbled in the last days of his illness, asking her to return a bizarre three-foot bust of Elvis Presley to Memphis. Reluctantly, Claudia embarks on a return to sender road trip to Tennessee with her 60ish aunt, who knew Elvis personally, and a caustic teenage girl who is harboring a secret. Ellis (who has built a career in romance writing under the name Leanna Wilson) has some strong moments scattered throughout the story, which is laced with over-the-top Elvis humor and interesting reflections on Claudia's cautious return to faith in God. The first half of the novel is an awkward mix of road trip sitcom and overwrought melodrama before jettisoning the humor somewhere after a tour of Graceland. Elvis fans will likely enjoy the homage paid to the King—in addition to the travelogue of sites around Memphis, each chapter is named after an Elvis song—but others will find the gimmicks distracting. Moreover, the writing is marred by theatrical clichés (sudden tears threaten like the storm clouds popping up on the horizon). Despite some entertaining scenes in this faith fiction offering, it lacks cohesiveness. (Jan.)

Compromising Positions by Jenna Bayley-Burke

image Falling in love is the last thing on his busy agenda-but compromising positions can lead just about anywhere.

David Strong knows how to do a lot of things-run an international fitness company, finesse stock portfolios and stay out of emotional entanglements. That is, until he gets tangled up with Sophie Delfino and her Sensational Sex workout. He-s supposed to help her demonstrate Kama Sutra positions for her couples- yoga class. The rigorous postures require more than just physical control. And his co-instructor unexpectedly tests his control to the limit.

Sophie-s been fantasizing about David since her teens, but she never dreamed she-d actually be expected to run through her intimate desires-with an audience! The class is very professional, tame even-or it would be, if she-d been in any of the positions before. But she hasn-t-except in her wildest fantasies about David. Sophie knows she wants David in every way, and she-s flexible enough to use whatever she has to get him.

David can-t afford any unexpected distractions. Besides the sensual positions he has to endure without embarrassing himself in public, there-s an embezzler stealing from his company. And then there-s Sophie-who is well on her way to stealing his well-guarded heart.

Warning: This is one exercise program you won-t need to consult your doctor before beginning-unless he-s hot and available for house calls. The Kama Sutra isn-t for the prudish or faint of heart, and neither is this story.

Editorial Review

“With sensual love scenes, flirty repartee, and a man and woman clearly meant to be together, you get everything you could ever want in a romance novel. Overall, I have to say that Compromising Positions is a must read!”
~ Long and Short Reviews

"Compromising Positions would have to be one of the best contemporary romance novels I have read in a long time. Jenna Bayley-Burke delivers it all, romance, humor, and great chemistry between her hero and heroine. It is so well written. The pace is great, and the story line fantastic."
~ Fallen Angel Reviews

The Wicked House of Rohan by Anne Stuart

A fallen woman. A most wicked plan for redemption.

Venice, 1740.

Desperate, starving, Kathleen Strong makes her way to a job interview that promises a chance at proper employment...and maybe a bite to eat. Accused of "gross immorality," she's adrift after being dismissed from her governess position, despite being entirely innocent.

That innocence is precisely what a mysterious group of debauched aristocrats finds so alluring about Miss Strong. When they propose a scandalous offer that she can't refuse...she can't refuse. But if the darkly gallant Alistair Rohan, a gentleman involved in all manner of wicked deeds himself, has anything to say about it, Kathleen can escape her disrepute in another way.

Of course, the escape route looks very similar to the group's illicit proposition itself...
